This will probably be counter-intuitive but it’s vitally important. When you are performing max-effort work you actually want to hold your breath during the lift. The reason for this is simple; it makes your body much more stable and tight.
Fill your stomach with air before you un-rack the bar and hold the air until the lift is completed. It will take practice but try to fill your belly with air rather than your chest.
Retracting your shoulder blades will shorten the distance the bar has to travel. By reducing the range of motion you can lift more weight.
Here’s how you do it….Picture yourself doing a cable row. At the end of the movement you pull your shoulder blades back and squeeze your scapulas together right?
Start the bench press movement in this same manner just as the picture below demonstrates.
If you want to bench press more you have to focus on all the muscle groups involved.
When you start the lift you are primarily using your chest muscles, but after a few inches the triceps kick-in so they are going to need assistance work as well.
And please don’t forget about your back. Your lats serve as a shelf and give you a more stable base to push from. Not to mention they stabilize the weight on the way down (which is half the lift).
Even your legs, grip and biceps are involved in the bench press so you need assistance work for all these muscle groups.
When I was a freshman in high school I couldn’t even bench press 135 lbs. Today I’m not a world record holder or anything but I’m proud to say I’ve put up 450 lbs and over 600 pounds with a shirt.
How did I do it? I studied other successful bench monsters and I copied them!
